TOOR|BOS at UJ Library’s Afrikaans 100 Event
Date: 8 May 2025
As part of the Afrikaans 100 celebrations, the UJ Library collaborated with the creators of Toor|Bos to bring a unique artistic dimension to the event. The exhibition complements the occasion by exploring themes that resonate with the evolution of Afrikaans: reinterpretation, reflection, and the reshaping of familiar ideas.
Toor|Bos—featuring work by Dineke Orton, Jaco van Schalkwyk, Willem Boshoff, Jaco Meyer, Bibi Slippers and Quaz Roodt—uses mirrored images, poetry, sound, and virtual reality to encourage visitors to look at known landscapes anew. This process of transforming existing material mirrors how Afrikaans has grown and adapted over the past 100 years through collaboration, creativity and the reworking of shared cultural elements.
Including Toor|Bos was therefore a purposeful partnership: a way to extend the celebration beyond language itself and offer visitors a multisensory experience where artistic expression and linguistic heritage meet. It aligns with the event’s aim to honour Afrikaans not only as a historical language, but as a living, evolving space shaped by many voices.
