While I use a variety of materials and processes in each project, my methodology is consistent. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work. Each project often consists of multiple works, often in a range of different media, grouped around specific themes and meanings. I am intrigued by the universal notion of alienation. Many major social constructs are quintessentially built on the exclusion of a group of people with certain characteristics. Those constructs, like history, racism, heteronormativity, queerphobia and patriarchy, can only seem legitimate and successful with a restricted view of the world, refusing to consider the whole picture.
This results in the construction of the “other” and its deliberate exclusion from society, in the fatal misbelief that this can lead to happiness in the long run. We are inevitably shaped by concepts that we have never agreed to be born into. My research is driven by the idea of regaining control of our own identity or its ability to mutate. For this, we need to determine what these concepts are and to reflect on how we are shaped by them.
