The character of Theodorah originated in 2003 with Theodorah Comes to Johannesburg, and Marasela spent a six-year period from 2013 to 2019 working and living as this alter ego with her series Waiting for Gebane. Gebane is portrayed as a similar line figure in her artworks, further pushes the idea of her imagined reality.
In her previous series, Marasela used Dolly Parton as an influence for Theodorah, however, she is now looking at Josephine Baker as a base of inspiration for Theodorah’s next iteration. In this series, where she waits for her fictional husband Gebane, Marasela explores the themes of identity and uses the platform to discover herself and the things, which she enjoys most in life.
